Downloading eBook for Free

Introduction

If you are a Mandarin speaker, you probably have heard of the saying "there is no such thing as a free lunch".

  • Well, this holds lots of truth, because life is so real that we all need to earn money for a living.

In today's world, it seems no service, especially those involving intellectual pursuits, is truly offered for free, except from family members and besties.

  • For seemingly basic skills, paid courses are readily available on the market, covering everything from gym workouts and swimming techniques to baking and cooking.
  • What's more, certifications and examinations often come with a price tag to validate a certain level of competency.

Free social media platforms like Facebook and Google come with hidden costs that many users overlook.

  • They utilize our photo data to develop facial recognition technology and leverage our browsing habits for targeted advertising.

If something is free, you are not the customer, you are the product.

Knowledge is Not Free

For healthcare professionals, accessibility of information is power because it can affect our clinical decision making.

  • In fact, we do not have to memorise all dosing information or know every disease on the Earth, as long as we have reliable resources to find the answer.

While the internet provides a wealth of information, we are hardly able to differentiate the true motive of the contents or if there is any possibility of cherry picking with evidence.

  • The rise of AI chatbots has certainly made answers readily available for simple queries, but the quality of the answers needs to be carefully verified.
  • These chatbots can sometimes "hallucinate" information, meaning they generate plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical responses.
  • However, as AI models are trained on larger datasets with a huge user base, these biases can be minimized.
  • Meanwhile, as societies become more reliant on these tools for daily tasks, these AI chatbots will likely come with a price tag, and limitations will be imposed on free plans, such as a certain number of prompts per day.
Comparatively, subscription-based, evidence-based clinical resources (e.g. UpToDate, DynaMed, BMJ Best Practice) written by experts are generally more trustworthy than user-generated content, such as Wikipedia.

  • As a civilized people with integrity, supporting authors by buying original copies and subscriptions should be encouraged as copyright infringement is unethical.

Websites with Downloadable eBooks

The harsh reality of limited salaries can make it difficult to afford our favourite books, especially considering that they are constantly being revised and updated.

We are not here to promote these websites, but here are some places where you can download eBooks.

* Digital database Z-Library's domains was seized by the FBI in November 2022.

Knowledge isn't free, you have to pay attention.

Summary

Whenever I consider buying a physical pharmacy reference, the first question that comes to mind is whether I will use it daily.

  • Otherwise, it is destined to become outdated and a waste of money.
  • A bookshelf filled with unread books is merely a collection of potential knowledge, not a reflection of true education.
