Moving to iPhone 14 from Android

Introduction

As a long-time Android user, I recently decided to switch to the iPhone 14 due to the concerns about battery heating issues with Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1.

  • However, iPhone 14 also presents with heating issue at intensive usage, especially when downloading multiple software at once.

Overall, the transfer from Android phone to an iPhone is smooth, including migrating WhatsApp data from Android to iPhone.

  • Nonetheless, there are some unpleasant experiences that you may have to tolerate with using iOS system.

Battery

Being a heavy phone user, I quickly notice that the iPhone 14's battery does not last as long as those Android phone with 5000 mAh, despite the claimed battery optimisation in iOS.

The battery charging speed with a 20W charger is fine for its relatively small battery capacity.

  • Theoretically, it can easily be outperformed by the 100W battery hypercharge in certain Android smartphones.

Despite taking steps to maximize battery lifespan (such as selective enabling background app refresh and avoiding extreme ambient temperatures), the lithium-ion battery will still become less effective as it chemically ages. Hence, the Battery Health feature available in iOS 11.3 and later is a very useful tool.

  • You can find these in Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
  • Maximum battery capacity measures the device battery capacity relative to when it was new.

Battery Health in iPhone

Camera

The overall image quality of the iPhone 14 camera is good, without oversaturation or overbeautification commonly found in Android smartphones.

  • However, the subject cannot be properly focused when it is too close to the camera, likely due to the low f-stop number.

Since the iPhone camera is designed to be a simple point and shoot camera, you need to install third-party applications to manually control it.

Plus, I am slightly annoyed that I cannot switch off the shutter sound unless the phone is in silent mode or the Live Photos mode is turned on.

Location Services

To save battery life, I habitually switch off location services and restrict background app refresh.

  • However, turning Location on or off is not as accessible in the iPhone as it is with a button on the Android notification screen.

Nonetheless, you can selectively allow certain apps to have permission to use your location.

Poor Mobile Signals

I never thought about poor mobile signals on the iPhone before using it.

  • On many occasions, there is no internet reception even when the mobile data mode is on.
  • To fix the issue, I have to turn on flight mode and turn it off, then switch on the mobile data mode again.

Summary

Overall, I am satisfied with the iPhone 14, but I also miss some of the features and functionalities that I had with my Android phone.

  • I hope this article is useful for anyone who is considering making a similar switch.
