Photography Composition

Introduction

Taking a nice photo is more than just point and shoot.

  • It requires us to mentally compose the scene we want to capture.
  • Sometimes, we want a specific subject to be the focus of the photo.
This is where composition techniques come in handy, as they can help guide the viewer's eye to the intended subject and create a more visually appealing image.

Rule of Third

A useful tool for composing visual images will be the "rule of thirds".

  • The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
  • Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.

The Golden Ratio

The Golden ratio (also known as the golden spiral, Fibonacci spiral or phi grid) is another composition technique that is used to create a visually pleasing image.

  • The golden ratio is a ratio of approximately 1.618, which is derived from the Fibonacci sequence of numbers. It can be seen in the spiral pattern of shells, the branching of trees and many other natural forms.
  • The idea is to place the subject or focal point at or near the intersecting points of the phi grid.

Leading Lines

Leading lines technique involves using lines in the image, such as roads, pathways, or natural lines in the environment, to lead the viewer's eye to the subject or point of interest in the photo.

Symmetry

Symmetry technique involves using symmetry in the image to create balance and harmony.

  • It can be achieved by centering the subject in the frame or using a reflection in the composition.

Getting the shot you want with the camera is ideal. But thankfully, with technology, you can always edit the photo to your liking later.

  • Remember, photography is a form of art, and different composition can create different emotional responses and effects.

There are always some undiscovered beauties that surrounds our life.

  • It has been how long since you have sat down to see a sunset or listen to a rainfall?
