Viewing HEIF Images on Windows
Introduction
HEIF is a newer image format that offers better compression than JPEG while maintaining high quality. It is becoming increasingly popular, especially on Apple devices.
- However, when you want to view these images on a Windows Computer, you may run into some compatibility issues.
Install the HEIF and HEVC Extensions from Microsoft Store
The HEIF Image Extension (Free) enables Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices to read and write files that use the High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format.
- Such files can have a .heic or .heif file extension.
- However, some HEIF images are compressed using the HEVC format, which requires the HEVC Video Extensions package (USD 0.99 - optional) to be installed as well.
Once installed, you will be able to view HEIC files in the Photos app like any other image format, and File Explorer will generate thumbnails for your HEIC image files.
Alternative: Use a Third-Party Software
If you do not want to pay the USD 0.99 for the HEVC Video Extensions, you may opt to use a third-party software that supports these formats. Some of the popular options are:
- For HEIF images: XnView MP or CopyTrans HEIC for Windows
- For H.265 videos: VLC Media Player
These programs are free and easy to use.
NOTE: HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer (the free HEVC codec) mentioned in many online websites is no longer available in the Microsoft Store.
Use Dropbox Camera Uploads to Upload HEIF Images as JPEG
- Open the Dropbox app.
- Tap the person icon at the bottom right corner.
- Tap Camera Uploads. (You need to enable this feature first if you have not done so)
- Select Save HEIC Photos as ...
- Select JPG or HEIC.
NOTE: Changing this setting will only affect future uploads, not files that were already uploaded to Dropbox
Summary
If users frequently encounter compatibility issues or need to share photos with others who may not have the necessary software to view HEIF images, they can consider switching to JPEG in phone camera setting.
