Frank Shann Drug Doses
Introduction
When I first started working in a government hospital, I was surprised to find that the Frank Shann Drug Doses booklet is one of the most extensively used and trusted references for paediatric doses at Malaysia.
Almost all the provisional registered pharmacists in the hospital carry a copy in their lab coats.
The portable booklet serves as a quick reference for the doses of drugs commonly prescribed for systemic use in both adults and children (except for diagnostic agents).
- However, it does not provide complete indication-specific dosing, side effects of drugs and modifications for renal or hepatic failure as provided by Lexicomp or BNF for Children.
Cooking Recipes
- Cake, diablo. Fan oven 180°C. Melt 180 g dark cooking chocolate + 170 g unsalted butter in double boiler. Off heat, mix in 4 well-whisked egg yolks, 170 g sugar, 40 g almond meal; sift in 80 g self-raising flour, mix. Fold in 1/3 of egg whites (beaten stiff with pinch of salt); fold back into rest of beaten whites. Put in buttered + floured 20 cm tin, tap out air, bake 30 min.
- Potatoes, roast. Oven 230°C (210°C fan-forced), pan with 5 mm peanut oil in oven; peel potatoes, boil 20-30 min until friable on outside, drain, put in hot oil, cook on top shelf of oven for 60-100 min until crisp (baste every 20 min).
Mobile Application
The booklet content is currently available as a mobile application at both Google and iOS App store.
- The once-off purchase includes a lifetime license to use the app.
The RCH Paediatric Intensive Care guidelines, which used to be purchased within the mobile application, are now freely available as a separate mobile application.
News on 18th Edition
According to the official website, the publication of the 18th edition of Drug Doses has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
- In the meantime, it is safe to keep using the current 17th edition.
- As of December 2024, there is still no further news on booklet publication.
However, the DrugDoses application (both Google and iOS App) has been updated with the latest information provided by Frank Shann.
Where can we do bulk orders for the drug dose book and PICU book. Thanks
ReplyDelete6 years ago, I got my first and last physical drug dose book at Kamal Medical Bookstore at Kuala Lumpur. However, these days, I find mobile application is much faster at search. May try finding at Shopee and Lazada also.
DeleteThe PICU Handbook is published by McGraw Hill. For bulk order you can contact their local distributor at overseasmag@gmail.com.
