Micromedex
Introduction
IBM Micromedex is now known as Merative Micromedex.
- It supports informed, evidence-based clinical decision-making, drug supply chain management and patient education.
Currently, all the Micromedex mobile application listed below are available in both Malaysia Google Play Store and iOS App Store.
Micromedex Drug Reference and Micromedex Drug Interactions
In comparison to other subscription-based drug database (e.g. Lexicomp), these solutions can be considered as low-cost premium drug database alternatives.
- Micromedex Drug Reference: $2.99 USD a year
- Micromedex Drug Interactions: $9.99 USD a year
Generally, I find the Clinical Teaching in Micromedex Drug Reference to be potentially useful in medication counselling, but is not written in layman language. By experience, there are increasing off-label uses and dosages included in this resource.
Micromedex NeoFax and Micromedex Pediatrics
Micromedex NeoFax and Micromedex Pediatrics focuses on evidence-based drug information for neonates and pediatric patient group respectively.
NeoFax is one of the most widely used neonatal drug dosing but has been discontinued in print format since June 2012 (The last copy is 2011 edition).
- It is now only available as online or mobile application (cost: $29.99 USD a year).
- You may also find extemporaneous formulations within this reference.
Micromedex IV Compatibility
Micromedex IV Compatibility is powered by the Trissel's Clinical Pharmaceutics Database.
- Cost: $2.99 USD per year.
- Provides both drug-solution compatibility results and drug-drug compatibility results when creating an admixture or administering via Y-site.
NOTE: Lexicomp actually also used Trissel's Clinical Pharmaceutics Content for its IV compatibility database. Hence, there would be no significant difference in the information offered. Hence, if you would like to find additional information on IV compatibility and stability data, you should look into
Micromedex Website
Different from its mobile application counterpart, Micromedex Web Application provides a more in-depth answer.
Furthermore, depending on your institution subscription, it may also provide access to Martindale and others.
Summary
In practice, Lexicomp has been my go-to reference at work. However, soon after I start to use Micromedex Drug Reference more often now, I can safely say that I have undervalued this resource a lot.
Nonetheless, if budget is still a concern, you may look into FREE drug reference database, such as Medscape.
