Micromedex
Introduction
IBM Micromedex is now known as Merative Micromedex.
- It supports informed, evidence-based clinical decision-making, drug supply chain management and patient education.
In November 2024, a new Micromedex app was introduced to deliver more efficient access to all Micromedex content, including Drug Reference, Drug Interactions, IV Compatibility and calculators.
- Pediatric Reference and NeoFax will follow in a second release.
Following this announcement, the legacy apps such as Micromedex Drug Reference, Micromedex Drug Interactions and Micromedex IV Compatibility, will lose support in February 2025.
- In the past, these medical solutions have been considered low-cost, premium drug database alternatives (as low as $2.99 USD a year for Micromedex Drug Reference).
- However, the new pricing is not yet been announced.
Features
- Compared to legacy apps, the interface has become more user-friendly for easier access to information.
- Also, users may opt for automated content updates using mobile data or Wi-Fi only.
Contents
Apart from providing comprehensive drug information, I generally find the Clinical Teaching section in Drug Reference to be potentially useful in medication counselling, although it is not written in layman's language.
- In my experience, there are increasingly more off-label uses and dosages included in this resource.
On the other hand, Micromedex NeoFax and Micromedex Pediatrics focuses on evidence-based drug information for neonates and pediatric patient group respectively.
- NeoFax is one of the most widely used neonatal drug dosing but has been discontinued in print format since June 2012 (The last copy was the 2011 edition).
- You may also find extemporaneous formulations within NeoFax.
IV Compatibility is powered by the Trissel's Clinical Pharmaceutics Database.
- It provides both drug-solution compatibility results and drug-drug compatibility results when creating an admixture or administering via Y-site.
NOTE: Lexicomp also uses Trissel's Clinical Pharmaceutics Content for its IV compatibility database. Hence, there would be no significant difference in the information offered. Therefore, if you seek additional information on IV compatibility and stability data, consider exploring:
Website
Unlike its mobile application counterpart, the Micromedex Web Application provides more in-depth information.
Furthermore, depending on your institution's subscription, it may also provide access to Martindale and other resources.
Summary
In practice, Lexicomp has been my go-to reference at work.
- However, after using Micromedex more frequently, I can confidently say that I had previously undervalued this resource.
- If you work at a government healthcare facility in Malaysia, you may inquire with your pharmacy drug information department about free access to Micromedex via MIMS Gateway.
Nonetheless, if budget remains a concern, consider exploring free drug reference database like Medscape.
