Introduction

Providing drug information to patients and other healthcare professionals is a critical function of pharmacists. Hence, with advancement in technology, it is very common for all pharmacists to have few medical mobile applications in their smartphone.

To be honest, there are much more medical mobile applications available in Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Premium apps which need individual or institutional subscription

BMJ Best Practice
  • A clinical decision support decision support tools for health professionals which is published by BMJ Group.
  • Comorbidities tool is newly launched in year 2020.

Clinical Key

  • A clinical search engine from Elsevier, covering full-text books, full-text journals, guidelines and multimedia.

DynaMed
  • DynaMed is one of the leading evidence-based clinical resources for use at the point of care.
  • Treatment recommendations are well supported with evidence and international guidelines are being compared.
Indextra
  • A mobile medical library including a list of medical books, drugs guides and clinical guidelines, such as Oxford Handbooks and Oxford Specialist Handbooks, Stahl’s, Maudsley, Rapid Series, NICE guidelines, ICD-10 and much more.
Lexicomp
  • Lexicomp includes drug monographs, interactions, patient leaflets and more.
  • This application includes 30-days of access to all databases Lexicomp offers to newly registered account.

Skyscape Medical Library

  • Skyscape Rx, Clinical Calculator and Clinical Consult are included for free.
  • Covers over 400 resources/titles from leading publishers, authors and medical societies, such as AHFS Drug Information, Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, Harriet Lane Handbook, Ferri's Clinical Advisor, The 5-Minute Clinical Consult and Harrison’s Manual of Medicine.

STAT!Ref
  • STAT!Ref is a cross-searchable collection of electronic resources for healthcare professionals which might include 5-Minute Clinical Consult, AHFS Drug Information, Handbook on Injectable Drugs, Compounding Sterile Preparations, Oxford Textbook of Medicine, Paediatric Injectable Drugs (The Teddy Bear Book) and Trissel’s Stability of Compounded Formulations.

Therapeutic Guidelines (formerly eTG complete)

  • Therapeutic Guidelines (formerly eTG complete) includes the latest version of all Therapeutic Guidelines topics, integrated in a searchable digital product.

UpToDate

  • UpToDate is one of the leading decision support resources for clinicians - including drug topics from the Lexicomp core databases and recommendations that clinicians rely on at the point of care.



Top free drug info apps

BNF Publications
  • An app that offers up-to-date offline reference to the British National Formulary and the British National Formulary for Children but is only available in UK app store.
  • The drug database is updated monthly.
Drugs.com Medication Guide
  • An advertisement-sponsored drug information database and requires an internet connection to view drug information.
  • You may also access AHFS Drug Information Monographs here for free.
Epocrates
  • Epocrates is a widely used drug database. However, the free edition of Epocrates does not provide disease info (which is in collaboration with BMJ best practice).
Medscape
  • Medscape requires a free login account to use, view and download offline database. Once downloaded, you can have offline access to a wide range of topics, including medicine, drug interaction, disease and medical calculator.
mobilePDR
  • The Prescribers’ Digital Reference (PDR) is a compilation of manufacturer’s prescribing information on prescription drugs. The original PDR was titled “Physicians’ Desk Reference”.
  • Available for free in website and US Google play store (not Malaysia). However, the database content of the mobile application may not be as updated as the website content.

Bluebook/NAG KKM Malaysia or Blue Book + CPG Malaysia
  • Updated with Malaysia Ministry of Health Medicine Formulary 2021-3.
  • The brand name search is not extensive, limited to proprietary brand name.
  • Useful in Ministry of Health settings to identify category of prescribers.
Drug Counselling & Medication Guides
  • Available in android only.
  • Overall, it provides a good starting point of device counselling, however, the info in it may not be comprehensive.
HCTM Formulary
  • A drug formulary reference app created and maintained by PPUKM.
MIMS Malaysia and MIMS Gateway Mobile (Malaysia)
  • MIMS Malaysia requires internet connection to work, but MIMS Gateway Mobile offers offline database (last updated October 2018).



Antibiotic specific app

Sanford Guide
  • Sanford Guide provides subscribers with combined content of Antimicrobial Therapy, HIV/AIDS Therapy and Hepatitis Therapy.
  • The content is updated continuously but a subscription is required.
  • Full text search provides fast access while intuitive menu provides an alternative way to navigate the content.

Calculate by QxMD and MDCalc Medical Calculator
  • Both are free, intuitively designed, comprehensive medical calculator.
  • More information about the formulas could be found and is very handy.

MSD Manual Professional, MSD Manual Consumer and MSD Vet Manual
  • It is a free medical resource which provides a great brief introduction of a medical topic.



Paediatric drug dosing app

DrugDoses
  • For more than 30 years, Frank Shann’s little booklet has helped physicians all around the world prescribe drugs to children. It now contains close to 2500 entries and lists every drug commonly prescribed for systemic use in both adults and children.
  • It is updated with the latest database from Frank Shann’s 17th edition.
  • A paediatric medicine formulary belongs to Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Useful notes are included in each drug monographs.



Miscellaneous

  • Sharpen your clinical skills by exploring realistic interactive scenarios.
  • A practical guide to the safe use of common drugs in adults. Useful tips are available.

Explain Medicine

  • A reliable and easily accessible medical article repository, serving as a rapid refresher for healthcare professionals.

  • Search for drugs that are unsafe or of low-risk to G6PD deficient patients.
